I've said this before but I strongly feel like we've lost an understanding of what Public Spaces are and are not and what their relationship is to the greater community.

There’s a good book waiting to be written about the distinction between public vs. private spaces across cultures + periods of time. The U.S. has a particularly tortured relationship to this distinction because of its history — signs like this reallly drive home that point.

I’ve talked to my brother about this a lot. There really aren’t a lot of places to just “be” in many cities, and that contributes to social isolation. Unless you go somewhere with the intent to spend money you’re loitering. That’s…not great.

+1 Weather excepted, you can learn a lot about a city by observing what people choose to do (or not do) outside of the home. I grew up in a place where life mostly happened inside of buildings; it really does a number on how you think about public spaces even years later.
