in my behavioral econ classes, game theory was presented as a universal model for understanding human behavior in social/political contexts now i’m wondering if it’s more like a historical description of how a specific type of strategic mind worked in the mid 20th century

yes! i feel like there's such a thing as zombie models, similar to
@SamoBurja's concept of "dead players" — i.e. models that we continue to use, even though they were the product of a much different era -
Soviet nuclear planners didn't use game theory (!!). This should be enough to cause us to question its claims of universal applicability.
