During deep Jhana meditation, are the sensory circuits of the brain actually shut down? If the practice is to literally allow those circuits to stop functioning through control of attention, then could awareness be the shape of all circuits firing at the time?

Those are really good questions. I don't know. I think filtering is happening rather than shutting down. I don't think the brain shuts down exactly. Sensory data does clearly get disconnected from memory though.
