X: Whoa there buddy, did you just launch into a technical thread in public out defining your terms? Me: Haha yes, sorry about that. I'm very open to adding why I care about it, some of the background, and it's definition. I'll do that here.
ICS - Intercranial Self-stimulation. It's when an animal with an electrode implanted in its brain lever presses or does some task to recieve electric stimulation at the electrode site. When Olds and Milner created the original wirehead and discovered ICS it spurned a field.
It's important to me because it was a fundamental tool for uncovering the neural basis of emotion. In particular it helped uncover what Panksepp calls the SEEKING system and others call the 'wanting' system.
Up a level, I'm interested in the SEEKING system and the internal experience of having a SEEKING system as tied into the practical account of transcending "suffering*" aka dukha in Pali. *I'd render it as having a bad time.
From Dharmic framework, "thirst" taṇhā, "grasping" Upādāna are the causes of suffering. Not so superficially, the Lateral Hypothalamic Corridor has the structure which perceives literal thirst. The LHC is the core substrate for the SEEKING system.
The LHC does not only thirst but any homeostaitic imbalance and energizes behavior to correct them. Lesions to certain regions can abolish appetite or satiety, causing starvation or obesity.
