Buddhist scenes are annoyingly managed by what I call the "Buddhist Boys" ... a long time ago...when I first encountered and understood it, I was shocked. Now, sadly, I expect it, just like everywhere else. Misogyny...in this case masked by spiritual bullshit.

Yup I’ve dealt with it! I can’t be in sanghas like that because acquiescing to those dynamics is not liberating for me (or them honestly). Fortunately I am part of a local sangha and an online sangha where this dynamic doesn’t exist!

Like in a sangha where I was told to sit in the back of the room because I was a distraction for the men who were trying to meditate...

that's extreme and obvious..the nasty stuff is that which typical Western men in charge dish out...it's subtler and maybe worse for that reason...(maybe what you referred to was Western led. I've found that sort of behavior in more classically eastern version or in Hinduism too)

I think you have a good point about the subtler stuff being worse because you can’t point to it and be like “this is obviously bad.” And if you do try to bring it up they make passive aggressive comments about you not advanced enough spiritually for being perturbed by it.

Yes in my old sangha that comment was made by a man from southeast Asia, but the western man in charge overheard it and let it slide. And he was the one perpetuating they subtler stuff.

But the obvious comment was just as nasty, to me at least, because I was in recovery from PTSD from sexual violence at the time. And everyone there knew I was! The fact that my supposed “dharma brothers” dismissed my suffering so easily, really really hurt.

yes, you sound normal...the obvious stuff is devastating too. I'm sorry that happened to you. It really sucks.

Do either of you know some good books detailing how meditation spaces can have shitty dynamics? Ideal reading for my would be high on relatable personal accounts, less theory. Cc @agleig

“Radical Dharma” is great! it’s from a black queer buddhist perspective.

Radical Dharma is good, yes. I actually wrote something on the risks for those dealing with complex trauma...which is connected to what we're talking about I think.https://www.madinamerica.com/2018/11/mindfulness-complex-trauma/ …
