I think the right way to think about panpsychism is: awareness exists; there's no explanation of how it comes about except via identifying (neuro)correlations w/ instances of its manifestations. What might be going on? Not much different than early deductions about atoms.

Can you help me to understand how identifying awareness with basic physical stuff (quarks, strings, loops, or whatever the claim might be) offers a preferable answer? That seems to me just as mysterious. And I feel like I’m just missing something obvious.

The hook (if there is one) is we seem to be in contact w/ material reality's interiority via our awareness. I'd think 'fields' are a better physical vehicle for dissociated individual conscious unity than particles. [At the same I think the project is pretty hopeless.]
