Would it be good to do mass regular testing of people using pulse oximeters to find who is under oxygenated? Needs no consumable equipment, one cheap machine could do hundreds of people a day. And you'd know exactly who to send to hospital. @leashless ?

seems super reasonable but I bet we can make them for five bucks each or just build them into phones

How accurate is the "4Free Oxygen Measure" app on my old Android phone? No idea, but it's basically doing the same phone camera technique. The ads I get from Chinese electronics vendors say they're out of pulseox's, but it's just a few dollars of sensors and a display.

Phone camera trick can only see changes in blood volume. It can't say anything about oxygen saturation. Proper pulse oximeters use the different IR/red light absorbance properties of oxygenated vs deox. hemoglobin to calculate % saturation with Beer's law.

I'm assuming the phone camera approach also looks at IR/red absorbance, but with reflected light instead of transmitted; not sure how it can see blood vol except maybe capillaries getting thicker/thinner affecting color? My pulse-ox clamp sensor wandered off somewhere years ago.

I saw that Samsung devices have the the IR/red reflection sensor after u posted this. Was thinking about the pulse apps that use white flashlight.
