If supply chains change for good and we are left with far less capability to create innovative long tail products it's really important to learn the DIY skill of fixing your own stuff. What are the first principles of learning to repair your own stuff?

Develop physical intuition: Have a screwdriver with many bits. Take apart old things you aren't afraid of not being able to put back together, see how the different mechanical bits all work, try to put it back together. Take photos during disassembly. Label where screws belong.

Good candidates: VCRs, printers. 90s tech. This is the kind of stuff I took apart as a kid.
