I don't (& don't remember if I used to) understand "just be yourself." There's no essential self independent of total context, but advice doesn't have to be rigorously ontologically consistent. But what is this advice even getting at? When & how does it lead to good outcomes?

Dont let your actions be dictated by the expectations of others. Use your own values and model to act. (The implication being you know well enough how to act right.) Trust yourself. Express your own shape and experience. Helps in expressive creative endeavours.
