Can anyone bang out a simple plugin or mode line entry or something to display count/order/number of word under/adjacent current cursor position in a text file? (Not the line number, nor the column number, nor the word count of the whole doc.) vim/emacs/anything, I don't care

here's my dirty vim hack. mmv select up to the word from the start, then press g then control-g. it will give the number of words selected since you selected from the top, it will give you the total counted up to the word you are interested in

i don't use vim much. could one record a macro to do that in one go, mark, select, display outcome, and then clear the selection as if nothing had happened? or does the count disappear if change the mark/drop the selection?

what I was using to speed it up a little bit was v - visual select gg - goto top g ^G - word count macro mode only captures 'v gg', which saves a bit of time but you still have to do word count manually.
