This would also tell me there exist two systems which are capable of being decoupled, that interest flows from the core system to sensory systems, and that interest is moderated internally or by another process.

Totally agree. This outlines my experience with the inward(downward) travel towards the further jhanas. It always starts with auditory interest then a retraction from outside phenomena and towards bodily signals. Then those fade as awareness sharpens to singular stimuli.

another hypothesis earlier jhanas reflect activation of Lateral hypothalamic corridor (1st) and septal area (2nd), but there also must be inhibition sensory input (looking for where that is, maybe thalamic inhibitory neuron covering also associated with attention)
