keep thinking that "pivot" is the wrong descriptor, definitionally implies a lack of movement people are looking for something closer to "chopping your feet when cutting," afaict, but neither really has the right resonance (and latter is horrifically unwieldy)

a pivot realigns stance before the explosion of next movement, it's a pause into new setup

I guess that's true— perhaps what I'm referring to is more connotation, or perhaps I'm mis-inferring that a pivot necessarily requires one to be at a dead halt but I do think there is a dimension of focused explosiveness that that term as shorthand doesn't properly convey

Hmm, yeah I would assume its a sports metaphor, probably basketball—which would imply a dead halt. It doesn't quite capture the momentum and multiplicity of an organization though. On the other hand, isnt the point of pivoting to actually halt momentum in the current direction?

thinking outloud, continuing with sports the pivot is stable ground from which force is dynamically exerted the rest of the body can be in motion and realigns motion around the pivot point

truuu I like that thinking! In basketball you might pivot to overcome a defender. In football you might spin move to bounce off a defender and continue moving. Do you think pivot implies circumnavigating an obstacle, instead of reorienting towards a new guiding star?

i don't think it implies one over the other staying still with something that isn't working is death otho bad pivots are clumsy and create internal misalignment leading sometimes worse outcomes than not pivoting -> tripping & eating shit!
