When you are taken in by pretty graphs on impressive letterhead and call any idea that an academic or bureaucrat spits out with a number attached to it "evidence based" all you're doing is parroting received wisdom, and you're usually doing it for profoundly illiberal interests.

The neoliberal spirit is a fundamentally critical one. The Mont Pelerins were deeply opposed to a sclerotic status quo. They partially coopted the institutions of Rooseveltian corporatism and in doing so unleashed vast human potential. They refused to be cogs.

The Mont Pelerins worked gradually inside the institutions because they missed the revolutionary moment of their lifetimes. They weren't ready for the World Wars or the Great Depression, so they salvaged what they could from the ashes.

In case you haven't been paying attention, we actually do live in revolutionary times, and we are shockingly ahead of the curve in ways that many of us don't even realize. Our object is political change, incrementalism is just a strategy. Sometimes you need to revolt.

A serious neoliberal movement could control the major internet infrastructure companies inside a year, and topple the narrative enforcement machine of the old order shortly thereafter. We have the tools, but I'm not sure we have the will. If we found it, we'd be hard to stop.

Do you define serious neoliberalism anywhere? Who are the individuals writing about it right now?
