Capitalism harnessed greed, which I think of a stance caused by the trauma of scarcity. Our version of capitalism has kept the scarcity around so it's self perpetuating.

As soon as commerce expands beyond the local and verifiable, 'how it was made' becomes blackbox. In the modern economy I bet the black boxes nest at over 100 layers deep for some products like the machines that make computers.
