Astronomers are deeply concerned as #Starlink pollutes the night sky wth light trails. #Starlink fans argue improved connectivity. So here's an analogy. Imagine walking out of your door to find that all of the cables that are normally underground are now at waist-height.https://twitter.com/cgbassa/status/1217907157900976129 …

This evening I got my first view of #DarkSat, the @SpaceX #Starlink satellite with a special coating to make it less bright in the night sky. The combined image below shows that #DarkSat is not much fainter than some of the other #Starlink satellites... What is going on here? 1/n pic.twitter.com/vSLTOTgKDl

I'm arguing for *any* connectivity. The folks on the losing side of the digital divide don't have the capital to build underground wire or fiber. #Starlink leapfrogs trad telecom.pic.twitter.com/pgWwdOrt20

With #starlink Earth based astronomy will get harder. But, with @SpaceX launch volume it's also going to be much cheaper to launch satellites for astronomy. @elonmusk Can you work out a deal so astronomers end up benefiting from the success of @SpaceX?

Not all astronomy need a satellite to be done. Many important results are obtaining from telescope on the ground.

I'm wondering if any of those ground base operations affected could be moved up in principal.

No, telescope in the sky are used only for all the science that cannot be done on the ground mainly because the atmosphere absorbs those photons (e.g. IR, UV) or the best resolution of the images. If you don't need the best resolution (e.g. SFR determinations) ground is best.

What I'm hearing is that ground observing capacity is more available. If there were more capacity, people would be okay.
