I love this list of what it takes to be a good scientist by @BrianNosek When we talk about scientific practices, it’s valuable to think about what the social identity of a #scientist should entail. Note that nothing in this identity involves outgroup derogation.pic.twitter.com/gDPpJim0cg

Regarding "does no harm". Are scientist who do the following not good? - Animal trials for medicine that might save lives of millions - Human trials where harm is minimal, but still exists - Controversial research that people feel offended and harmed by

Good point. Perhaps should be "minimizes harm" or something reflecting maximizing benefit in decisions in which there is a harm-benefit ratio to evaluate.

I'm skeptical. I don't think it's a good idea to condense a complex topic that's been discussed over millennia into a soundbite. "Minimize harm" might still be in conflict with freedom of speech, not at least since some may take offense for trivial things (i.e. concept creep).

Having a proper soundbite that suggests the complexity is important as a spreadable introduction to the conversation. Do no harm is not real, but what minimize harm is pointing to is important.

I'm also skeptical of "does no harm", or even "minimizes harm". Sometimes the truth hurts. These doctrines require a scientist to potentially bury the truth in favor of not harming or minimizing harm.

Yes, it's not like we lack evidence of people being hurt of scientific findings that are nonetheless true/accurate/relevant. "Minimize harm" presupposes consequentialism, which is debatable.
