Rooms without windows are terrible. Apartments without windows unthinkable. What technology/design could make windowless apartments pleasant to live in?

Have a look at Coober Pedy, an Australian mining city that has lots of windowless underground apartments. The main thing that makes them pleasant to live in is the awareness that the outdoors are hostile, and the enclosed space offers protection.

Also the "cave houses" in Matera, Italy. Beautiful inside and outside. Another thing that helps is non-regular structure of these cave houses.
