I have a formal sitting practice again. I credit it to a friend telling me he thought of his practice as a wellness practice, similar to brushing teeth. Also, getting curious about new things manifesting. It's been a dry practice for a very long time.
Theres nothing like a poorly formulated goal to kill instrinsic motivation. My longing for what isn't (a former peak experience) prevented me from investigating what is (filtered out parts of mind with their own intelligence that will respond if looked at long enough.)

"Being present" is a synonym for curious awareness. Attention is unfortunately a poor vehicle to do this because it is a filter on awareness, occupied habitually by thoughts. Lots of formal sitting is unlearning this habit.
