Remember: there's probably 10x or even 100x cops who did this and weren't dumb enough to get caught. It's not easy to catch cops planting evidence, when evidence can be a tiny bag. Something that would help: mandatory random strip searches of officers on the job.https://twitter.com/inthenow/status/1145391549812842499 …

But the people searching for drugs on cops could have the same perverse incentives. They would plant drugs on the cops to make more arrests. Or they are both cops, and ignore the drugs they find while searching each other.

Tax funded police should be disband. Instead we should buy insurance for the things we want to protect. Our guardians will only be incentivized to protect what we buy coverage for. They won't harass anyone for victimless crimes.

🤯 mind blown. Nice. Now, might there be perverse incentives between crime and police like protection rackets?

I got the idea from my favorite book: http://daviddfriedman.com/The_Machinery_of_Freedom_.pdf … If one of the insurance companies is participating in a protection racket, then customers would just switch to a different insurance provider. In a free market, whoever provides a service cheapest wins.

Good answer. Tugging on the string a bit more... Whadabout: monopolies on force, interfacing with the justice system?

justice. Imagine everyone around you hates caffeine, and they are willing to pay high insurance premiums to live in a caffeine-free neighborhood. Your insurance cost would be low or negative if you agree to randomized blood tests and the death penalty if you are caffeinated.

Extreme example & good test case I wish there were more areas where folk could experiment with alternative social systems that they could opt in to. In an American context this wouldn't fly. No contact like that would be enforceable & local law would be appealed.

*contact Opt out would be important too! Exile instead of death should always be an option imo. I see many issues starting something as radically divergent because of conflict with the laws of the land and existing in contexts where there is already a highest court.

Yeah, the death penalty is an extreme example. It doesn't have to be all-or-nothing. Private arbitration is already more popular than the government legal system when it comes to business. Private arbiters want to serve their customers at a good price.

Some aspects of traffic law are enforced by police, but other aspects are enforced because people don't want the cost of their insurance to increase. In USA you are even required to have insurance just to drive. So we already have both systems existing at the same time.
