To do anything interesting you need: a transpiler a bundler npm configs Html, CSS, events, DOM, concepts a framework then, the actual language but maybe ES6 or some other permutation and it's different rigidity and flexibility but not where you want them

Also forgot: a dev environment. And forget about transparent errors and warnings. Things will fail silently. I'm sure I'm missing a piece of the puzzle, so it will be another tail on the whip.
