Some minds have a high tolerance for failure and become absorbed in super niche domains where everything has to be custom built. They push forward what we had known or known to be possible even though there is no perceptible path to commercialization.

It tends to take decades to operationalize this kind of knowledge as something with niche use, and decades more before tech has any mainstream relevance.

e.g. DNA discovered in 1950s, PCR, sequencing genomes 1990-2000s, high through-put DNA sequencing 2000s to today. Personal dna ancestry analytics companies, are only within last few years cheap enough to have broad appeal.
