My PhD work is out! A story on how animals persist at a task, even in the absence of a positive outcome, and how this persistence can be interjected. Spoilers: it's about tug of war between dopamine and octopamine on the same circuit.

Fascinating historical accounts of efforts to control locusts (with flamethrowers) as well as contemporary perspectives from myself, and colleagues, regarding the ongoing challenges in predicting and fighting locust plagues.

Early co-authorship with bigshots is correlated with positive career outcomes. and thanks for for correcting my causal overclaim when i first tweeted this. Matching is a rather problematic strategy because aspects like drive are unobservable.

I was reading about reproduction in TINY egg parasitoids earlier (as you do) and it's broken my brain a bit because it's so bonkers. See THREAD⬇️. Remember that all of this action takes place in the microcosm of an insect egg (Copidosoma floridanum📷Scott Justis)

A great collaboration with ! We uncover a neural circuit in Drosophila that generates persistent running behavior when the fly is hungry. Our modeling suggests that the recurrent connectivity motif in the mushroom body is sufficient to explain the observed persistence.

For those using optogenetics: a cautionary tale. Light alone can modulate neural activity and behavior through heating. Our latest paper shows mechanism. 1/
