I spoke with my optician a few weeks ago while getting a new prescription. He was familiar with the Cintiq displays and mentioned the same problems that crop up for them are pretty much the same as when you have a monitor at the 'proper' distance from your face.
In both cases you're supposed to give your eyes short breaks throughout the day regardless of distance to screen. The 20/20/20 rule - focus on an point 20 feet away, for 20 seconds, every 20 minutes. Tough to remember, but I'd imagine the closer the screen, the more it's needed.

Yup totally agree about taking breaks. And yeah the closer the screen is to your face- the more strain you will create so more breaks would be needed for sure.
