In both cases you're supposed to give your eyes short breaks throughout the day regardless of distance to screen. The 20/20/20 rule - focus on an point 20 feet away, for 20 seconds, every 20 minutes. Tough to remember, but I'd imagine the closer the screen, the more it's needed.
Yup totally agree about taking breaks. And yeah the closer the screen is to your face- the more strain you will create so more breaks would be needed for sure.

This is 100% true and it sucks. It feels like we've been using PC monitors for ages, but in the context of the modern workforce, it's still a fairly recent shift (Cintiqs even moreso). Oh boy am I looking forward to all the studies when we're retired on how we screwed ourselves.
And it's another thing to sit at a desk and look at a monitor for 12 hours a day. ( I sit at my computer desk with monitors at about 35-40 inches away from my face for 15 hours a day personally) Both are both bad for your eyes sure
