Character artists: How do you block out your full-figure forms? I.E, I'm prepping a Kaiman from Dorohedoro sculpt, and im trying to decide between blocking out with zspheres, a mesh from max with the blockouts, or just using subtools. What's your typical goto?pic.twitter.com/Lt3pzYvqik

I usually start with a very rough Zsphere sketch which I almost instantly turn into rough Dynamesh just to get primary forms Once I have the rough shapes down, I iterate on those shapes by cutting the mesh into chunks like head/body/hands/boots/etc.

Once the Dynamesh sculpt has the primary forms down, I'll usually decimate it, do retopo, and then import the retopo back to Zbrush That gets subdivided, the forms from the Dynamesh get projected onto it, and then I keep sculpting and adding more modeled details

Do you usually spend any time making accurate proportions with your zspheres or more just a basic armature and work proportions once its dyna'd?

I usually try to get joint placement and pose right in the Zsphere stage, and maybe some volume if it's a chunky character I don't find Zspheres very useful for anything aside from, as you said, a basic armature Dynamesh is where things actually take shape for me

I love this old breakdown and it still holds up fairly well. It does hurt my soul a little thinking about trying to use ZBrush to retopo a whole character, but at the time Raf made this it was probably was one of the better tool options for retopology.
