A few industry professionals ended up following me (probably on accident) along with a lot of unhired talents/post grads and since talking about portfolios and reviews is on the rise, what is your genuine opinion on 'fan art' in a portfolio? cont.

I know right! Mixed messages all over the place. I've started a few projects using more concept art-focused pieces (not my concepts) yet I find them unfulfilling or harder to get myself to work on them. It's much easier to see awesome fanart and start work from that.

That it gets shared around a hell of a lot easier, thus more self-bred exposure for your work.

Consider this though - you will pretty much never be working on fanart in a professional capacity outside of maybe doing toys/figures so it's to your benefit to practice recreating another artist's concept more often than an existing character. Fanart is great, but in moderation.

I'm always super wary around any artist or pro that tells you to 'never' do something. "Only the Sith deal in absolutes" right? When you do something well, there's always exceptions. Except using a WIX site. Never use a WIX site or
@GavinGoulden will haunt your nightmares.

Hah! No worries, it's part of the learning process. I use a SquareSpace site for an actual portfolio page, but I'll usually just forward folks to my Artstation page. That works fine for a portfolio.
