That it gets shared around a hell of a lot easier, thus more self-bred exposure for your work.
Consider this though - you will pretty much never be working on fanart in a professional capacity outside of maybe doing toys/figures so it's to your benefit to practice recreating another artist's concept more often than an existing character. Fanart is great, but in moderation.
I'm always super wary around any artist or pro that tells you to 'never' do something. "Only the Sith deal in absolutes" right? When you do something well, there's always exceptions.
Except using a WIX site. Never use a WIX site or @GavinGoulden will haunt your nightmares. 
Whether or not you use your own concept instead of another artist is totally a judgement call, albeit one you have to be VERY honest with yourself about. I trained as a concept artist in school, decided to switch to 3D, and even I don't completely trust my own design skills 100%.
