A few industry professionals ended up following me (probably on accident) along with a lot of unhired talents/post grads and since talking about portfolios and reviews is on the rise, what is your genuine opinion on 'fan art' in a portfolio? cont.

It doesn't matter. While original designs can earn you points, they still have to be incredibly strong which is a lot to ask. All that matters is quality, fan art or not.

One caveat is doing fanart that is supposed to be exactly like the piece you are trying to mimic. Making a realistic Lara Croft better be as good, if not better, than the real version or you are probably hurting yourself more than helping.

Fan art, to me, works best when you take a well known design, put your own twist on it, and then create it in your own style. People will instantly recognize it but you still get to add your own input.

100% this! Satoshi is dead on with changing up fanart to suit a purpose. Recreating an existing character, say Tracer from OW, will inevitably lead to people comparing your work to the ACTUAL Tracer model. If it's not the same caliber, those looking at your portfolio will notice.
