All self-development needs a routine, a practice. Why? Because the rhythm of the routine shows that all other phenomena: mind, body, emotions are transient. They come and go. Like waves of the sea. Achenbach “Ships in a Storm on the Dutch Coast” 1854

self-development: it is important to have a mentor or teacher who is non judgemental about feelings, memories or thoughts arising during the teaching. This way the student learns how not to judge emotions, memories and thoughts, but to observe and act or not act upon them.

Many teachers ask questions, give exercises, tasks, establish a practice. Their concern rests with the progress of the student. If you don’t want to do something for your teacher, it’s not your teacher.

It could be that unless we face crisis, we are not willing to change a set of and beliefs, which is understandable. A “trick” - a slight of hand - makes us believe in something else. And if it works then we might be inclined to stick with this new modus operandi.

One of the first steps for self-development is to seek a teacher. It is very difficult to make sense of the mess of actions, emotions, relationships and thoughts, at the same time surviving. A teacher gives a reference point, discipline, stability by which to recognize progress.

Within meditation one can distinctly make out conscious thoughts, planning the future or analyzing the past. Instead of being bothered this stream of words, one should be grateful to have such an active mind which is concerned with our survival. Then the thoughts start to cease.

Some people have so much willpower, ambition and passion that they must do what they do. Perhaps they will expend this in one lifetime. It is better to act ones owns actions than the actions of someone else. Then change is possible. De Chirico: „The Great Automaton“

There are three fundamental truths for self-development: “I am not my body. I am not my thoughts. I am not my feelings.“ without those truths no progress is possible. Rather: „I have a body. I have thoughts. I have emotions.“ Painting by Magritte: „The Human Condition“

Separation is the most important aspect of self-development. To realize that the judgement of ourselves is not necessarily true, neither is the severity of feelings which come and go. Both have the captivating quality of keeping us adrift. Gericault: “The Raft of the Medusa”

It's amazing how much resistance you get when you suggest that an organization should create meaning for its people. "No! We're just here to make money."

In his self-portrait Carl Blechen emerges from the dark, just like the trees in the distance, his features washed out. He is part of the landscape and surrounded by it. Is he leaning on a tree stump or just something he sketched? It seems to say: he is what he is and part of it.

So far a change in organizational culture has been deemed impossible due to its „stickiness“ - the way to unstick it is to „disjoint“ perceived cause and effect, in the belief system itself, so that more cultural flexibility is the result.
