Very curious! Could the reason of the bias be that the ‘french flag model’ is easier to test experimentally than the ‘balancing model’? Or maybe one is more common than the other in nature?

Thanks David, but I should just re-clarify that one of the main arguments of the article is that the phrase ‘French flag model’ doesn’t have much sense. That’s a conflation of the ‘French flag problem’, and the ‘gradient model’. The balancing model also makes a French flag!
