Gwendolyn Brooks: “First fight, then fiddle.” We are in an emergency, an actual emergency. And I am trying very hard to separate action that serves my ego—action on this space, yes, but also action in poems, on stages—from the quiet unsexy actions no one will ever know about.

A few years ago I was neglecting substantively working with newcomers in recovery bcs I was on the road so much. Talking w a sober elder I said, “But I’m doing that work w these poems, right?” He said, “It’s not The Work if people line up to tell you how great you are after.”

I haven't seen that name before. I agree that 帕氏 must refer to Pallas. But I haven't often seen the scientific names of birds directly translated into Chinese. In many cases there are official ornithological names and other names in common usage.

他们的充满同情心的笑容被口罩的痕迹纵横交错,就像手掌的命运线。我也忍不住流泪。 Their smiles crisscrossed by impressions of face masks— they resemble fate lines on the palm of the hand. I, too, can't help but cry. 🙏

A virtuoso reconstruction by and with help from a dozen other reporters on the ground in China, and top-notch editors. This is not commentary but real reporting talking to real health care workers in Wuhan. Truly a must-read.

The truth behind the dramatic US airlift from Wuhan--most seats went to diplomats, the remainder sold at inflated prices. The 1,000 US citizens left behind, including some with newborns, feel abandoned. This feels like the USG looking after its own.

I can’t stop watching this. If I was in any other camp, watching this would definitely make me question my alliances. I’m stunned by this video. This is amazing.

By turns grim and hilarious, but brilliant throughout. By Ian Johnson. "Coronavirus and the Panic Epidemic: The Chinese government is going all-out because it knows the people don’t entirely trust it." via

Are Americans safe from the coronavirus? In only 3 years, Trump has eliminated the office of pandemic response, drastically scaled back the CDC’s overseas outbreak prevention efforts & discontinued a surveillance program meant to detect new viral threats.

Discussing the translation of "le respect humain" with we arrived at 对人道的尊重. Here's a much more accurate Chinese translation of that last sentence: "抵抗瘟疫的唯一手段是对人道的尊重"。

After the sleeper has burst his night pod climbed up out of its silky holdings the dream must stumble alone now must mope in the hard eye of morning in search of some phantom outcome while on both sides of the tissue the dreamer walks... —Maxine Kumin "The Dreamer, the Dream"

In honor of Camus' clarity and precision, I suggest this: "The only means of fighting a plague is humane respect." —Camus

It's fascinating to compare the translations of this one term: "le respect humain." It's best not to reinterpret Camus. How did the Chinese translator arrive at 诚实 "honesty"? How did Gilbert arrive at "common decency"? "Humane respect" seems much more precise.

And here's the original French: "Il n'est aucunement question d'héroïsme dans tout ceci. C'est affaire de respect humain. Voici une idée qui pourra faire sourire bien des gens, mais le seul moyen de combattre la peste est le respect humain." —Camus
