Famously, lefties think their political opponents are evil while Tories think they're wrong. Ever wondered why? This piece by @Docstockk goes a long way towards explaining; it's worth reading rn because she's currently getting the hose from her own side.https://kathleenstock.com/the-pity-party-on-the-left-2/ …

Even better, she highlights pertinent contributions from Hume, Arendt, Scruton, & Nietzsche. I've long noticed that educated Tories read leftie books. We turn up to debates armed with Marx, Fanon, & Foucault while the other side hasn't read Scruton, Smith, or Hayek. [2]

And no, the piece isn't focussed on any of the issues now convulsing public debate, except tangentially. It's about sentiment - in the Adam Smith sense of "fellow feeling". There's something in it for people on both sides of the aisle. [3]

I used the British "Tory" formulation because I think US political divides are sui generis. Their Democrats aren't really liberals, but a sort of progressive-cum-corporatist party, while their Republicans aren't really conservatives, but a sort of religious-cum-corporatist party.

If you look at some parts of government and academia you are right, but we've had 12 years of Conservative government in the UK

Didn't Douglas Murray state that, he reads their books but they condemn him without reading his?

Yes he did. He even makes comments on Foucault during one of his talks with Scruton. Having been in such circles you, at best, get snippets of a passage or a video clip. Even if you show the full context said person will pain the entire thing by such clip.

If you do, even if you have sentiments on the left you feel like an outsider. It didn't take until I was an adult to treat the Liberal party as its own party (though one I'm not allied with) rather than as the enemy.

That was my point - and should be obvious to anyone who reads your piece. I see this sort of treatment so seldom I want to share it with everyone (or at least my Twitter followers).
