A personal piece on my anger and fears about the US withdrawal from Afghanistan You can be deeply critical of how a war is conducted – I’ve reported on abuse and failings for over a decade – and still feel that this departure is reckless and cruel.https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2021/jul/11/forget-the-geopolitics-lets-focus-on-the-human-cost-of-the-exit-from-afghanistan …

Special thanks to @heatherbarr1 for helping me untangle my thoughts when I was trying to write this piece.

The question ultimately becomes: Would you send your son or daughter there in the service of this cause?

This is a good question! Almost never, death and other permanent war injuries, both physical and psychological, is for other people's kids.

Shades of Englands retreat from Empire, particularly India- in power for two hundred years, worming into every aspect of life, extracting value and transferring it back home, then whoosh! Gone in a couple of months, leaving everyone there to deal with the fallout on their own.

Two questions: (1) What value has the United States extracted from Afghanistan? (2) do you think Britain ought to have continued its colonial occupation of India?

It was never going to be a good withdrawal because it was a bad entry and occupation. We’ve spent almost 20 years there. We could spend another 30 and leave with the same results.

Reality needs to be looked at.What is good for America too. We helped for years & years….we cannot be in every country for so many years & still take proper care of America. Our streets & bridges, our rail systems, our schools, our internet access….child care….education…money
