Every author I know is gonna see the little dagger next to junior's name and know exactly what it means (Means there were massive bulk orders, and yes people have done that to buy up a slot on the list)https://twitter.com/yashar/status/1194739533994250241 …

Oh, I forgot! Related: junior's dad did it, too. 🙃https://newrepublic.com/article/144541/art-steal-trump-boosted-book-sales-gamed-new-york-times-best-seller-list …

QTing this to address the List's metric for what makes a bestseller: it's an obscure process, but we learned A LOT when Handbook For Mortals gamed its way onto the list (notably sans dagger). Here's a good rundown by @Ceilidhann: https://www.pajiba.com/book_reviews/did-this-book-buy-its-way-onto-the-new-york-times-bestseller-list.php …https://twitter.com/TheRealDaetwan/status/1194751564008681473 …

NYT also doesn’t use an actual metric for its Best seller list....they actually don’t tell how they determine bestsellers. It’s been a controversy for years

I do want to add, as an aside, that I think Don Jr's book probably would have hit the list without any bulk buying shenanigans involved! Would it have been #1? I can't say, and we'll never know. I guess Don Jr. wasn't willing to trust his fans enough to earn the spot on his own🙃

Now more readers know. Is this the NYT calling it out or an accepted part of publishing?

TIL... (Maybe in a few years we'll find out how much money supposedly raised for charity went toward the purchase.)

The whole endless marching parade of FOX network polemic-floggers has been using the pipeline of publishing, bulk-buying, and quietly remaindering since the first one-word-shrieking-title Ann Coulter used to kick off her neverending book tour.

Usually it's purchases made during the first week to artificially inflate numbers. Bookshops (ones that report) report those bulk buys to the Times.
