I welcome the debate today in the House about how to best support seniors. While the pandemic has been hard on everyone, it has been hardest on seniors. Our government supported them with one-time payments that provided low-income senior couples $1500, tax-free. (thread)

We recognize that older seniors have different needs. As seniors age, they are more likely to outlive their savings, have disabilities, be unable to work & be widowed—all while their health care costs are rising. That’s why we’ll increase Old Age Security by 10% for seniors 75+/2

During the pandemic, while seniors are at their most vulnerable, Bloc leader @yfblanchet has made a habit of playing on the anxieties of seniors for political gain by making misleading comments about their financial security. /3

He claims seniors got “practically nothing”. $1500 is a lot of money for most people, tax-free. He claims their pensions are “constantly losing their buying power”. By law they are indexed to protect their buying power against inflation./4

Our Liberal government is committed to strengthening seniors’ financial security. We restored the age of eligibility for Old Age Security;  we ⬆️ the GIS for single seniors; we enhanced the Canada Pension Plan for future retirees; and we’re cutting income taxes. /5

Taken together, our government is making a real difference in seniors’ financial security and there is more work to do. Seniors can always count on Liberals to listen, understand their needs and work hard to deliver for them. /6

Where are improved Canada Pension Plan benefits? Liberals, and previous governments have promised to increase payments for decades. All talk and no action! Meanwhile retirees live with 1-2 % inflation increases.

No. It's been hardest on the 10s of 1000s of laid off aviation sector employees. Thanked for helping bring home Canadians and ship PPE and vaccines and then abandoned by all levels of gov't. Only country in G20 to have done nothing to help. #saveCanadianAviation

Seniors with #dementia are being left behind. #nationaldemetiastrategy at $50M over 5 years are peanuts.. If it is still on track for $12M this year using 564k diagnosis equivalent to $21.28 a Year or $1.77 per month #NotEvenACupofCoffee @anitavandenbeld
