For the first time, we're getting a better picture of the Chinese government's internal coronavirus data. A dataset assembled by the PLA's National University of Defense Technology leaked to Foreign Policy contained 640000 rows of data, spanning 230 cities https://foreignpolicy.com/2020/05/12/leaked-chinese-coronavirus-database-number-cases/ …

"640,000 rows purporting to show the number of cases in a specific location at the time the data was gathered. Each update includes the latitude, longitude, and 'confirmed' number of cases at the location, for dates ranging from early February to late April."
Show this thread -
"The data reviewed by Foreign Policy includes hospital locations, but it also includes place names corresponding to apartment compounds, hotels, supermarkets, railway stations, restaurants, and schools across the breadth of the country."

"It’s unclear as yet how the university gathered the data. The online version says that they aggregated the data from China’s health ministry, the National Health Commission, media reports, and other public sources."
Show this thread -
"The man most responsible for building the database appears to be Zhang Haisu, a director at the school’s Info & Communication Department. In a May press release, the university credits Zhang for building the 'Fight the Virus to Return to Work Database' & praises his dedication"

"The school publishes a data tracker for the coronavirus: The online version matches with the leaked information, except it is far less detailed—it shows just the map of cases, not the distinct data."

"Even the public version of the National University of Defense Technology dataset sporadically restricts American IP addresses." https://www.nudtdata.com.cn/

Important thing to note is that it was leaked by an insider: "The source of the leak, who asked to remain anonymous because of the sensitivity of sharing Chinese military data, said that the data came from the university."

It's unclear what that data may mean, and if it directly contradicts China's reported case numbers. We will know more when Foreign Policy opensources it. But what it more clearly shows is that China is withholding information about its testing apparatus.

In recent days, Wuhan began reporting more clusters, as was feared since the end of the lockdown. "China reported 17 new COVID-19 cases in the mainland on May 10, rising from a day earlier and marking the highest daily increase since April 28"https://www.reuters.com/article/us-health-coronavirus-china-toll-idUSKBN22N02F …

During those last weeks of Wuhan's lockdown, it was evident that the National Health Commission was manipulating data with 'asymptomatic' case reports — which contradicted evidence observed elsewhere. Now the outcome of that information withholding is becoming more clear.

"Of the new cases reported on Sunday, seven were so-called imported cases in Inner Mongolia involving travellers from overseas, compared with two reported a day earlier."

"Wuhan, the epicentre of the outbreak in China, reported five new locally transmitted COVID-19 cases, the highest since March 11. All were in the same residential compound in the city."

"Northeastern Jilin province, which on Saturday reported a cluster of infections in one of its cities, reported three new local cases. Nearby Liaoning and Heilongjiang provinces each reported one case, adding to worries about a resurgence of the outbreak in the region."

Now both Wuhan and Northeastern China are viewed as potential hot zones. There is greater concern for the NE because of widespread poverty in the region. We saw Wuhan's hospitals collapse, but the situation would be worse in China's border regions.

China has a better handle on this pandemic than most parts of the world. But the thing to note is that for every confirmed case, there are many more out there. Some estimates put that number at 10x; it differs depending on testing capacity and response. There are cases in China.

While some mitigations are still evident, a huge focus for the country became restarting the economy. This would be why the Communist Party may downplay resurgences as they appear. I'm still very concerned for China because of the population density and pandemic's time horizon.
