I can't speak for every field out there, but coming from a Psychology background, I was severely unequipped with the teaching I received. It came as a shock when I was met with how important programming was to my field and my job.

University courses at bachelor degree level seriously need to address their lack of coding courses. These should be mandatory for all sciences, especially social sciences, and part of every research methods course. It should be integral to the teaching of statistics.

It depleted my confidence, my self-worth as a scientist, it made me feel stupid, I also felt deceived - like why was programming the best kept secret of science, I had literally not even heard of it as a potential essential tool until I did MY SECOND master's degree.

I think most academics of similar fields can relate. I've seen too many bright Master-PhD students feel like they should turn away from a career in science because "coding is too hard" and "this isn't what I thought would be central to my job as a *****" It's not their fault.

This is also - particularly - true for medical school. Most medical research by MDs is done exclusively in Excel The lack of training not only holds back clinical research, but the ensuing illiteracy will also turn into a major problem once ML/AI permeates into clinical practice

Sadly a mantra that's been repeated many times by many people over the past few decades, to glacial progress. Much progress we've seen is from brave individuals taking on burden of switching a stats module to R. Two words stand in the way: student feedback

Exactly. Student feedback like 'I don't need this as a biology major. This course sucked' ... on my tenure application.
