Then I'll be glad if I could pass a certification stating that I have the required skills ;)

That being said, I get what your point is. Though we should not be mixing two things : The R community, which has, is, and will always be welcoming regardless of your skills The job market, and employers (thanks god not all) that are only interested in diplomas

And regardless if it's an R certification, a PhD in stats or anything, a lot of employers don't even look at a resume if there are no degree or diploma on it

I get a bad feeling from this. The talk of vendors and profits on the wiki grosses me out in particular.

The vendor thing I read as who will be the organisation responsible for the administration of tests - for instance Pearson Vue are a big testing org and they do things like handling bookings, have people monitoring remote exams, offer troubleshooting etc.

The questionnaire is to know if the community and companies think that a certification is useful for a anybody. If the answer is no, then we won't do it. This is why we ask people and why you are free to answer no.

Why would a company say no to this? It has zero cost to them

If they do not look at it. Some companies I spoke with where looking if you have a github with your own code. They do not care about a certification.

So still, they can ignore it if they want, but prospective workers will have to have the certificate by default. Seems like a signaling price companies can live with.

I don't think this will happen. To the best of my knowledge this didn't happen for other open source certifications from the Linux foundation
