**A Convenient Guide to Assist Ministers in Making the Right Decision on the REUL Bill**
A decision tree to assist government ministers in deciding whether to add an environmental safeguard to the Retained EU Law Bill, as many have called for.

It asks a number of questions starting with 'Should the government protect the environment in law'?

If the answer is no then re-read page 5 of the election manifesto. If the answer is yes, move to the next question 'Have we done it before'? The answer is yes, for example in the 2021 Environment Act.

Next question: 'what do the experts say'? An environmental safeguard is supported by the government's independent advisers the Office for Environmental Protection and the Climate Change Committee, amongst others, so answer yes.

The next question 'is there public support'? Answer yes, as hundreds of thousands of people have signed petitions or emailed their MP.

Next question 'will this stop me reforming retained EU law'? Answer no.

Final question: any reason not to proceed. Answer no. Call Lord Krebs to agree his amendment.

Congratulations to Dr Morgan Hughes @TheReremouse who was awarded her doctorate today. A wonderful study of bats in the West Midlands conurbation. A fantastic viva with a discussion of fat bats in the city being one of the numerous high points.

We need strong laws not warm words to protect the environment! The government has made commitments not to weaken the legislation that protects our species, habitats and environment. Those promises need to be enshrined in law and Lord Krebs’ amendment to the Retained EU #REUL Law… Show more
