Cheltondale was demolished in 1982. This monstrosity of a hospital wing replaced it. 🤢

This is a MUST SEE video!
A story of a town that did the impossible. What an inspiration to all towns struggling with devastating ugliness and the social problems following.

I haven't really seen many posts in the architectural revival circles about what's happening with Buda Castle and I think it's a shame. In this first image you can see what Buda Castle looked like in the 19th century in Neoclassical Baroque style. It was bombed in WW2 ./01

Building towers doesn't guarantee your city will be more attractive.
Life in the city happens at eye level. The skyline is fun to see from afar, but if your urban fabric is so coarse-grained and dominated by blank walls & dark, windy alleys, you're losing as a city.

A glass facade at street level is not 'transparant' or 'inviting'.
It's cold, uninviting and most of the time, everything but transparant.
This mistake keeps being made. These examples are brand new. Lethal to a city like Rotterdam that tries to make its centre more attractive

Perhaps one of my more radical views:
Build factories so they will be beautiful enough to turn into luxury apartments 100 years from now.
If we really want to save resources, we need to make stuff that is worth reusing.
Or: make factories that are easily dismantleable

I hate it when discussions become overly political because I believe in end results that bring most beauty and wellbeing for all.
But to achieve this, there must be political will and thus political discussion. Ideally to achieve bipartisan support!

Our car-dependent status quo is the result of political choices that have steered decades of financial-, spatial- and design decisions.
It is time to repoliticize these decisions that shape our public spaces.

Felt like posting more of Bath. Got so many pearls I didn't share yet.
This seems like a very fine street to live. Beautiful, good density, a charming park, magnificent tree. Sidewalks could be a bit wider.

Good news: So they stopped this monstrosity from getting built in central Amsterdam... so far.
Now it's time for a respectful design that fits better within the city's beautiful historical fabric.
It's not that hard!

Just applying correct urban form and planting street trees is not enough.
Diversity of units, a healthy function mix, and most of all BEAUTY are key to create truly successful places

Perhaps a bit too dense to my taste, also a bit 'out of place' in a Dutch city, but nevertheless this project (Little C) does a lot of things right.
It delivers density in an attractive way, has plenty of attractive details and cozy (albeit dark) public spaces.
