Australian here... Looks like we have different cultural practices to the US. I'm pretty sure our advice is to (also) cover campfire ashes with dirt/sand. Snuffs the oxygen.

-be aware of any burn bans in your area
-keep your campfires and debris piles small
-DROWN THE FIRE when you’re done, then stir the ashes, then feel them to make sure they’re cool
