I had to learn it this week too ... involuntary celibacy - men who can't get women to have sex with them. (Feel like vomiting) apparently the van driver killer in Canada was an incel and that incited his attack. 😣

I should clarify. "Incel" is a specific group, not all involuntarily celibate men. Incels have entitled and violent beliefs about women. I don't know too much on it yet and maybe that's a good thing! 😉

"Incel" was actually coined by a woman who ran a blog & semi-support group for people regardless of gender who were celibate but didn't want to be, and acknowledged that often it's about learning social skills (among other reasons). Then misogynists hijacked it & became men only.

This is a thing that frustrates me. I’ve read how “incel” was also used and useful in the trans community. I can recall uses of the phrase “friend zone” that did not accuse women (but which were about the idea of self-presentation).

I think there are many mentally ill or socially challenged people for whom it is useful to acknowledge some basic principles with or about. One is that they need to be attteactive and explicitly ask out people appropriately, which is hard.

But explicitly asking questions is key to affirmative consent. Also: many people’s awkwardness or status (esp. financial class, trans, etc) can interfere with ability to form relationships. Relevant to not just dudes but disadvantaged PoC, single moms. Celibacy snowballs.

Yes, trans or gender non-conforming ppl can have trouble finding partners even if they have good social skills, esp in small towns or remote areas, as can physically disabled, mentally ill, autistic, socially awkward or low self-esteem folks, or folks in tough situations. Not…

everyone who is involuntarily celibate for long periods is misogynist or dangerous to partners, and all deserve to have a supportive community, just preferably not one that encourages hostility, objectification, and violence as the ones using "incel" label now so.

That’s the thing. These selfish guys will hijack any label or term to make it about them. By letting them have the label, we let them recruit. Unless we want to condemn every POTENTIAL terrorist (which might be many), it’s important not to condemn all incels/Muslims/evangelicals.

At this point, it's pretty clear that the term incel refers to a specific group & that's it's fair to have certain expectations about them. Those don't by any means apply to everyone who is involuntarily celibate, but if someone applies the "incel" label to themselves, reasonable

There are nearly 2 billion Muslims worldwide with a few major sects & several minor, a number of different cultural traditions & very few expectations valid for all. That's not true for the possibly tens of thousands now calling themselves "incel", which is rooted in misogyny.

Elliot Rodgers had narcicisstic personality disorder. Whether himself, the media, or common lemmings want to label him as part of some movement doesn't change the fact that he was likely to be violent regardless of support, nor is calling1000s of people misogynists intelligent

The term as used in this discussion is applied to a specific subset of men who choose to identify as "incel". They immerse themselves in this created society, supporting each others warped reasoning, beliefs & behaviors. They have their own words for certain descriptions.

Sound it out. Involuntarily celibate. I don't care if there's also a group of people who you think we gross going by that name, there always will be some group. The media say "scary incels" and tolerant rainbow flag folk want to paint every virgin the same color, but not Muslims?

We're talking about ppl—men, in this case—whose identity is defined in large part by their virginity & blaming women for that, not ppl who sometimes strike out at the bar when looking for companionship.
