Healthcare is not a human right. Housing is not a human right. Food is not a human right. One could argue that a wealthy society should strive to ensure its citizens have access to the above, regardless of their circumstance... But they are resources & benefits, not rights.

If you’re going to reduce rights to what you possess in a brute state of nature, why would freedom of speech even be a “right”? If someone stronger than you wants to beat the shit out of you for something you say, what “right” have you to be protected from that?

This discussion always shows how radical the US founders worldview & wisdom (imo) was, & how most people don’t (or can’t) distinguish between negative & positive rights, or believe in rights that transcend government.

They nailed it. Took a long time for it to be implemented in practice for all people but the ideas were sound.

All human rights are determined by the societies in which we live. None of our rights are inherent. By extension, nothing is off the table when determining what is or isn't a right. It's up to society to determine the rights of its members, and that conversation isn't over yet.
