In particular, language seems like a hypergraph index to latent causality. I constrain words to be robust handles to my mental motions. By sharing this index, different agents can enforce symmetry between their inner causalities (which also have symmetry with external ones).

Modeling the statistical structure of language absent any context is a bit like modeling the latent space of all airplane cockpits. It will enable you to generate new realistic airplane cockpits via interpolation, but it misses the purpose & the broader context of this interface

The common thread here is that language is always an interface: the study of language only makes sense in the context of the relationship between an agent and its environment (including other agents), an agent and itself, or many agents as a collective.

    - Language as operating system for the mind (a tool to formulate complex thoughts, to store thoughts, index & retrieve thoughts or memories) - Language as artistic medium (poetry, etc) - Language as DNA for society & civilization (tool to store and propagate knowledge, culture)

So what are the functions of language? On top of my head: - Language as communication channel (receive and convey information about the world) - Language as affordance (saying something = action towards a goal) - Language as social lubricant (chitchat, etc)

Codex update: - added buttons to shift all annotations after the caret left or right: for quick correction of broken character indexes (mainly in testing scenarios)

The new interface is now public. 76 newspapers collected, 600,919 issues, 5,429,656 pages scanned, 47,798,468 content items identified, 3,462,799 images, 12,493,358,703 words, 530,086 named entities disambiguated ... Enjoy !

There are also many possibilities for combining graph and textual overlap. For example, one could overlap all entity references to Michelangelo's family with syntax to derive the pronouns used in the texts for each of them.

Overlap doesn't occur just at the level of textual annotation, whether in markup or standoff properties. Overlap also occurs in the overlaying of the traits of entities themselves in the graph. And then there is the relationships between entities, & relationship hierarchies ...

"What is the future of operating systems?" Is a great question that comes up quite a bit (like yesterday). "Future of" is always tricky but one thing is always the case in software, which is everything interesting in tech moves "up the stack". Thoughts… 1/

PS/ This thread is also why "market definition" in software, which essentially exists to continuously re-abstract and simplify so we can do more is so difficult. Without a cycle of invention-fragmentation-reabstraction we would still be arguing over chips and network protocols.//

Re supporting changes: yes, I'd love to see it, but don't have the time/bandwidth to code this myself right now. In principle, it would be about updating the character offsets in the annotation targets whenever a change to the text is made.

Out of curiosity have you noticed issues when loading documents dense with annotation overlap? Such as ones that mix semantics with PoS and/or character level annotations? I take it annotation highlighting involves wrapping text ranges with SPANs and splitting as needed?
