I was just accused of misandry because I chose to circumcise my sons, and do not equate male circumcision with FGM - this on a thread about the NYT article on the special #misogyny of #childbirth. I am blocking the #trolls but felt this would be an appropriate responsehttps://twitter.com/tnicholsmd/status/1080282950418092032 …

How the hell are they NOT the same? Genitals are sliced up in both cases. Both are done for cultural/social reasons, because they somehow look better, even for supposed hygiene benefits. Both are dangerous and disfiguring. They ARE the same and are an injustice.

Male circumcision reduces risk of infection from AIDS by about 70%, which is particularly important in countries like Lesotho and Swaziland where AIDS prevalance is about 20-25%. We're not sure why yet, although we've ruled out a lot of confounding factors.

Adult, voluntary circumcision has ~60% *relative* risk reduction (1.3% absolute risk reduction), female to male only, under controlled clinical conditions in sub-Saharan Africa, where there is a heterosexual HIV epidemic. Such claims cannot be made for infant circ in the West.

Absolutely not. You’ve dangerously misunderstood the studies. Even had you not, you’d know that studies of voluntary adult heterosexual married men does not merit routine circumcision.
