some insight for prospective/current PHD students [thread]: I have a lot undergrad debt, no choice. got into a funded PhD I was relieved. But what isn’t explained to a 1st gen scholar of color is to get CV lines, go to conferences, give talks, etc, requires ALOT of extra money.

Most departments help students go to conferences; stick with local ones, etc

The thing is, sticking with local conferences doesn't create as impressive a CV as someone who's presented at international or at least national conferences, and that can make a difference on the job market.

Might be field-dependent. In mine, US conferences are preferable for connections.

But even at a primarily undergraduate institution, looking at the criteria for tenure, I think international conferences make it easier to argue for significance of scholarship. And the size of the conferences where we present is explicitly highlighted as relevant.

The original convo was about graduate students & costs- international conferences being too expensive. W/ tenure, too, pubs r key. & Faculty usually get conf support $ by institutions, but should be careful of cost! In my field 4 tenure: It’s about 1 pubs, 2 teaching, 3 service

Yes, international conferences are too expensive for many/most grad students. But the thread was also about how access to money, and the ability to go to expensive conferences, affects outcomes. Opportunities aren't equally distributed, and it matters.
