I study teaching and learning in higher education. From all the research (and practice) I've done, I think what it comes down to is this: the most important thing for teaching is actually caring about the students and their learning.

I really need to know whether this benefits the class *on average*, while potentially harming the few students with the worst anxiety, or whether it actually helps everyone.

At a PD session today, the speaker said it's a common misconception that cold-calling is harmful, and that the benefits have been empirically demonstrated for all disciplines, even low-level college math where anxiety is high. Does anyone have references?

I imagine I'm getting some small glimpse of the fury of the K-12 teacher. At least I do ultimately have the authority to teach what I want, even if it does break the online system. And I can always use a different system next time.

As if an extremely rigid curriculum, where AI determines what the students know and need to know, is somehow superior to actually addressing the questions of the students right in front of you.

Or would the student still be considered to have completed the assignment, even without the new topic? The response was that they couldn't say what would happen, and that this is why we're encouraged not to add topics on the fly!

So I asked the ALEKS rep how this would affect students who were working ahead in the course material (something that ALEKS encourages)—would they be told that another section had been added to next week's assignment that they'd already completed?

In Precalculus yesterday, a student asked me to review classifications of numbers (real, etc.), so of course I added it in even though it's not strictly part of the course material.

What are your experiences teaching with ALEKS? We're two days into the semester and I'm already infuriated by the idea that I'm not supposed to adjust any of the homework assignments after the course has started because it might break something.

I'm about to distribute syllabi that, for the first time, require two office-hour visits over the course of the semester. I hope this will introduce students to a valuable source of support that they may otherwise have overlooked. But I wonder whether I'll be overwhelmed....

If you want to support someone during their PhD, don't ask them when they finish or what they're doing next. These are going to be significant sources of anxiety, pressure, & complexity. Rather than reminding them of this, keep it simple with a "how is your day going?".

Does anyone else miss previous classes of students? Love getting to know new folks every semester, but can’t help missing the dynamics of certain classes. As soon as I learn everyone’s names and get in a groove the semester is over!

Reminder: students at all levels are HUMAN BEINGS! Do you care about them as individuals? If you re-framed your relationships as monetary transactions, would that be an improvement?
