Spoke today with the Ted Hull, the superintendent of Northern Neck Regional Jail, where Paul Manafort is being held. He's been pushing back on the idea that "VIP — what Manafort was classified as — means what it means outside of jail. See prev. from NBC:
Conversation
Hull said the term "VIP" means the unit houses one, at most two, inmates, as opposed to other units that can house dozens of inmates. Otherwise there is no "qualitative" difference, he said.
"I'm probably going to change the name," he said, citing all the recent media coverage
Why place Manafort in the VIP unit? Hull said it was because of the "management challenges" posed by Manafort's incarceration at the jail, including dealing with all the people — both inside and outside the facility — who may want to try to interact with Manafort

"I have to manage this man's incarceration safely, securely, and humanely," Hull said, of Paul Manafort's time in jail. "I don't want my organization to devolve into a circus." (Deleted previous tweet with a typo)
