I used this in a reply to another thread but I wanted to share it here: Jon Claerbout wrote this and I have found it helpful: Scrutiny of the Introduction:

I set up a train set that my Dad had when he was a kid, in the late 40's. He sent me some additional trains, look at the article on Watergate in the paper that he wrapped them in, one of the last times we used them in 1974, when I was about 7.

Two Jehovah's Witnesses came to my door this morning. In our brief discussion they said "the Bible is older than science" ??? et alia...

For this intro geology course I'm teaching I'm using a more interactive format than previously. I brought 66 powerpoint slides (for a 75 min class) and only got through 10 of them. I think that's OK, actually.

Yesterday I gave a practice (syllabus) quiz "online in the classroom". I set it up wrong so that they could see all of the correct answers!

I asked the students in my course how geology affects their lives. One woman on the golf team said "The slope of the land affects how my putts roll on the green."😃⛳️ (usually away from the mountains, right ?)

This reminds me of trying to coordinate co-authors to write a manuscript. The pilot and copilots are the lead authors, and the wingsuit guys are writing their specific sections, and everything has to come together at some point so you can submit.

Pluto was demoted in 2006, 13 years ago. So that means that almost all "traditional" students currently in college were taught that there are only 8 planets?

Found this old pamphlet on Geologic Time, published in 1970. I love the cover design. Has a vibe to it.

One more I just remembered I took back in 1996. Denali Fault, Mt. Hayes in the distance.

A few of my window seat photos...a Greenland glacier, outside Las Vegas (can you spot the fault?), and southwestern New Mexico--Mogollon-Datil volcanic field.

Today is the start of my 47th semester teaching geology! Still learning a lot. I change things every year, I hope for the better.

One year I had a classroom that had >100 students in 12 rows. The back rows were far away from the front of the classroom. I had the students write their row number on the test, and then calculated an average score for each row. I guess I should have added the standard deviation.

This is a great site. You can put in your location and get email notifications when ISS is traveling overhead at night.
