PS5 shipments in 2020 were inline with / slightly lower than that of PS4 when launch aligned
Xbox Series X|S shipments were notably lower than that of Xbox One when launch aligned
Demand is extremely high and supply isn't matching just yet.
Not a surprise given COVID impact. twitter.com/MatPiscatella/

Ideally both PS5 and Series X|S would be above where PS4 and XB1 were at this point in time, because the demand is clearly higher this time. But actually getting these consoles produced and shipped is challenging during a global pandemic
The below is specific to Xbox production

How long until the real impact of scalpers forces Sony, and Microsoft to try "new" strategies like in-store pickups, limiting # per customer, etc?
They're making money, now, but when adoption of next-gen software (games) is below projection, that's when they'll start to worry.

How long will this continue though? Will we be at the mercy of scalpers throughout the year because if so this will absolutely bury this gen for Sony before it even started properly. People will just forget about it as expected games drought marches on.

To me it’s inexcusable and a huge face palm for BOTH of these companies but especially for Microsoft to completely miss calculate the demand that there would be for their machine and to not have taken steps and planned strategies beforehand to try to have supply match demand.

We can notice the change of demand for some stuff in the market by COVID. High or low...
